Sad milestones

The number of American soldiers killed in Iraq has hit and passed the 1000 mark. The NYTimes has posted a visual database of each soldier. It is awful and important; both too much information, and not nearly enough. Take a moment to look at it and contemplate the lives that have been lost. And remember to contemplate the Iraqis that have also died in this conflict: some may have been enemies, but many were just people trying to live their lives, put food on their tables, go to school, raise families. And there are at least ten thousand of them who are gone. Here's hoping that the powers that be will see the rising death rates, and will learn from lessons taught in Southeast Asia. Here's hoping that this doesn't have to happen 54 more times before someone spells out quagmire.
